The Oakley House, Made Famous by John James Audubon
The Oakley House is a classic example of colonial architecture at it's best built circa 1806. The Oakley House is located on the Oakley Plantation and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The Oakley House is located on the Oakley Plantation and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The Oakley House, made famous by John James Audubon, an artist became known worldwide for his original drawings and paintings of birds.
Location
The Oakley House is located near St. Francisville, LA on Highway 965. It is a short drive from Baton Rouge, about 45 minutes one way. It is located in the Audubon Historic Site area, which includes 100 acres of the original plantation holdings. The area is preserved in the original natural forest habitat.
Oakley House
The Oakley House is a great example of colonial architecture and a working plantation house of the 1800's. Later this style gave way to the more popular classic revival style. The Oakley House was first owned by Mr. James Pirrie.
The furnishings of the Oakley House have been restored to the Federal Period and all rooms are decorated as they would have been in the early 1800's. There are some wonderful antique furniture pieces and I enjoyed looking at these unique designs that you don't see very often in antique stores.
One of the outstanding features of this house that really stood out when I toured Oakley House was the porch galleries. They are designed with a curve in the roof to allow the breeze to flow back downward and also through the windows. The upstairs gallery is screened and was used for sleeping on hot summer nights. The downstairs gallery is open and was used in afternoon and evenings to escape the heat of the indoors.
The Kitchen
The kitchen was located behind the Oakley House and was reconstructed in its original location. The brick fireplace remained standing making the exact location easy for reconstructing the original building. The kitchen also had a washroom and a weaving room off to the side.
Other Buildings on Plantation
The barn is located in the back of the plantation and is where a lot of plantation work was done. All the tools for plantation upkeep and blacksmith supplies were stored here. Today you will see many tools, wagons, carts, livestock supplies, etc. needed for the plantation to run smoothly. The barn is a rather large building compared to the kitchen and slave quarters.
There are two slave cabins located a distance away from the Oakley House. They are one room buildings and very small. I'm not sure if these are original buildings or restored to the era.
You will also enjoy the gardens. Although not elaborate, they are well kept.
John James Audubon
I can't forget to include the man that made Oakley House famous! John James Audubon was hired to tutor Mr. Pirrie's daughter, Eliza, on drawing. He only stayed at Oakley House for four months. He was paid $60 per month plus room and board for himself and his assistant, which was a nice chunk of money in those days. The agreement was to spend half his time tutoring Eliza and the other half was free time in which he spent in the forest drawing different wild bird species. John James Audubon completed around 32 paintings during his stay at the Oakley House.
Tours
Daily tours are available for a small admission price. Oakley House is open Monday through Sunday (except holidays) from 9 am to 5 pm. The tour starts with a short video and then a guided tour through most rooms of the house followed by a visit to the kitchen, barn and slave cabins. The complete tour takes about 45 minutes but you can walk through the grounds outside for as long as you like.

History Days
Oakley House participates in live history days several times throughout the year. On these days they will have lots of guides in costume of the early 1800's and live demonstrations such as lye soap making, weaving, washing clothes on a washboard, cooking on open hearth, horseshoeing, churning butter, mending clothes, making crackling and sometimes even a Civil War re-enactment of a short battle scene. I love to visit during these special days. We really don't realize how easy life is these days until you stop and think of all the preparation that went into daily life in the 1800's!
Be sure to pack a picnic lunch and visit the adjoining Audubon Park. There are numerous picnic tables and a nature trail if you would like to take a little hike. The trail is totally wooded and points out natural trees and plants of Louisiana.
Overall Recommendation
This is a great place to spend a spring or fall afternoon. If you are a history buff you will enjoy the tour guides lectures on the history of the plantation and everyday life in the 1800's. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the outdoors!
