Sumter County Florida
Riding horses and playing golf are big in this Central Florida county of Sumter
Named after American Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter, it was founded in 1853. The county seat is Bushnell, with Wildwood being the biggest incorporated city. The Villages is a huge unincorporated community that now has the largest population in Sumter County.
Besides Wildwood and Bushnell, incorporated cities include Center Hill, Webster and Coleman. Among several unincorporated towns are: Rutland, Mabel, Linden, Sumterville, Lake Panasofkee, Tarrytown and Croom.
Parks and Recreation
Playing golf is big here, with several country clubs and golf resorts dotting the area. The Great Florida Birding Trail crosses the Lake Panasofkee Wildlife Management Area. Once a busy sugar cane and fruit growing and processing area, Lake Panasofkee is now a favorite recreation area. Airboat rides plus fishing and hunting are popular. There are real Old Florida fishing camps still going, which provide RV parking, bait and tackle and boat docks on Lake Panasofkee.
Covering about 58,000 acres, the Richloam Wildlife Management Area is a popular place to get lost in nature. A shared trail covers eight miles, used by horseback riders, hikers and bicyclists. There are three loop hiking trails of varied lengths, plus campgrounds and RV parking.
The Dade Battlefield Historic State Park covers 80 acres and features a village just like the 1800s, yet it is only a mile from Bushnell. Within Bushnell is the Thomas R. Pierce House, also known as the Pierce Hotel. Both of these are in the National Registry of Historic Places.
Transportation
US highway 301, interstate highway I-75 and the Sunshine State Parkway cross Sumter County. The Sunshine State Parkway has only two exits in Sumter, one to US 301 and one to I-75. The main drag is US 301.
Sumter County Transit primarily provides a dial-a-ride service, but it does run two daily routes. Greyhound Bus Lines and Amtrak no longer stop here. There is no airline service in Sumter County, the closest would be at Tampa and Gainesville.
