My Life with Psoriasis and Daily Routine to Keep Psoriasis Under Control
Psoriasis effects my life so strongly there was days I didn't want to leave the house. But after finding a daily routine that worked, I was able to keep my psoriasis under control and put all my long sleeve shirts away!
Psoriasis is the annoying skin condition that seems like a constant battle for many of us. My flare ups can occur anytime without warning, causing me to reach for long sleeves and lotion!
The first thing I learned was to moisturize all the time. The thicker crème the better and apply liberally morning and night. Personally, I get it most sever in my hands and at nights I apply lotion and cover with cotton gloves just to try and keep the skin moist throughout the night. Skin renews itself constantly and by keeping it health and moist often I can prevent it from turning into sever psoriasis if I just make this my daily routine.
I also found that eliminating milk products was the biggest factor in overall skin health. Eliminating all dairy from my diet, I found my skin even felt softer and smoother over time. After eliminating dairy products from a cow for a year, my doctor recommend I try hard cheeses and see if it affected me. I was so excited to be able to eat it without turning into a alligator! It has been two years now and the diet seems to be working great, plus I lost ten pounds so that was a added bonus.
Once outbreaks do occur you need to remember to try and get the scaly flaky skin off as soon as possible. This dry skin prevents lotions, medications and ultra violet light from penetrating and helping to heal. In order to help remove it, I prefer soaks in the bathtub with lukewarm water and whatever oil I can find to add to the water. Use a washcloth to gentle brush across the skin. You will be surprised to see how much flaky skin comes off by just taking a bath.
I also am very careful about what products I use on my skin. Many soaps are too harsh for people who suffer Psoriasis. My doctor has recommended mild soaps with moisturizers, such as Aveeno and Nivea because they are designed to not strip the skin of natural moisturizers.
Lastly, if sever break outs occur, call the doctor. Skin with psoriasis is far more prone to infection and can turn into a complicated medical issue fast. Make sure you take immediate action if your normal treatments can't keep it manageable. No reason to suffer if the doctor is just a visit away.
