Game Review: Sniper Elite V2 PC Single Player

Sniper Elite V2 has some awesome moments interspersed into the mundane world of a third person shooter but it's those moments that games set themselves apart by and Sniper Elite V2 certainly does that. While the game overall may not be a top release it will continue to be played by diehard sniper lovers and will for the next few years serve as a title that will have set itself apart from the pack.

Sniper Elite V2 is the second sniper centric game where the player alone works to change the course of a war, or at least divert the disastrous plans of a few key people. You play the single player campaign as US sniper Karl Faireborne trying to stop the launch of V2 rockets near the end of the war.

This is a time when Russia and Germany were hot in action and the United States was busy elsewhere so the front lines in Berlin were not a stomping ground for United States troops. Your job is to stop scientists from being traded back and forth between Russia and Germany because the US is concerned they will soon be fighting with Russia.

The story is a sideline to the action as your main job is to move from rubble pile to bombed out village searching for individuals to kill. It is not as bloodthirsty as you may believe as the main focus is to stop scientists from further developing weapons of war to be used against countries.

Basically you have two options for completing each level either shooting your way through without worrying about detection or sneaking through to silently pick off individuals when possible. You have a sniper rifle, three different ones throughout the campaign, a machine gun and a Welrod 9mm pistol as your starting arsenal with new weapons coming from your victims as well as weapons caches.

You get to shoot the American M1903A4, the Mosin Nagant and the Gewehr 43 as your main sniper rifles while you also get the Welrod silenced pistol for stealth work. You will have your choice of machine guns but with limited ammo for these automatic weapons as you are not supposed to use loud weapons except for that single kill shot.

The sniper also has use of hand grenades and other devices he takes off of enemies so scrounging and searching for ammo and devices is very important. The machine gun you start with is the American M1A1 Thompson but you only have about 90 rounds at the beginning of missions and enemies only leave a few rounds if any for that weapon.

Several times I found it better to discard the M1A1 and pick up a German or Russian machine gun as ammo was more plentiful after I exhausted my own. Missions usually meant finding a particular individual and searching them with a few being simply to get to the next area while one at the end has you blowing up a V2 rocket before it launches.

Sneaking is pretty easy with the myriad of bombed and blown out buildings scattered throughout levels but the main obstacle is in the form of other snipers. Levels are strewn with soldiers but its other sneak snipers that are high on buildings and in windows that are going to give you fits every time you enter a new block.

You truly have to sneak and watch every possible vantage point for enemies as they even put snipers in and on buildings that are not where your character can even get to. This is the first game I have seen where they put bad guys on buildings where I would have sworn was just a backdrop but was actually part of the level.

This meant I had to rethink where I looked and tried hard to spot any possible vantage point so you have to actually think like the game designer to see where enemies could be. Several levels were very hard and you had to both shoot well to get the numerous enemies and move fast to get to the next vantage point where you were safe.

Roof tops played a role in one level so just roaming wherever was out and near the end sneaking did not matter so much as just hitting everything that moved. Sneaking is an option for most levels but some require brute force, or at least enough shooting to take out more than a dozen soldiers and snipers.

The game does keep you on your toes with positioning of enemies but their behavior is a bit too predictable as the AI does about what you would expect with them. Routine walking paths for predictable and easy to line up shots as well as the common duck and run for easy shots when you have good position are common. The game boils down to realistic sniper moves and one of only a couple games in the last five years for single handed combat as a sniper which does make it stand out to begin with.

Sniper Elite V2 does have enough fun in the single player campaign to make the purchase worthwhile in itself but you also get coop play and a multiplayer portion as well. The game has enough valuable gameplay and fun sniper work that I is well worth the price of admission.

I could take or leave the kill shot graphics where you get an x-ray view of the body and your bullet as it traces its destructive path through your victim for lethal shots. The games flow and feel is not disrupted that much by these seconds of slowed down time as your bullet tears through your target but it would be nice to be able to turn it off as an option.

Sniper Elite V2 comes as a single player campaign with coop two player missions that are the same as the campaign but with a friend or fellow shooter to tackle missions with. You can back each other up, create ambush like attacks and revive each other when necessary for some great two player gaming that really adds a lot of fun to the game.

There are several game modes available in the coop portion as well as the single player section but the coop play is where this game gets inventive and challenging. One game mode has you racing to recover parts of your escape vehicle but the real choice game mode is Overwatch where one sniper covers another as the partner races through checkpoints.

I did not get to play the multiplayer gaming portion of Elite Sniper V2 so I have no thoughts on that mode but the game as it stands with single player and coop gaming is well worth the cost. Graphics and audio are great but not top of the line as you would have guessed when I say this is not a top game release but it works more than well enough to really enjoy the game.

Sound is an important part of the game and it works extremely well with really good positional surround sound which is an important feature for a sniper game. You can easily hear guards as they approach and even hear the crunch of gravel as they walk amongst the rubble of war torn Berlin.

Graphics are pretty good to great but the over the top x-ray kill shots could have been toggled to allow the user to shut them off if wanted. Elite Sniper V2 is a fantastic addition to any sniper lover who wants the full on effects of single person combat against overwhelming odds.

Sniper Elite V2 continues the excellent action of a sniper in World War II and is well worth purchasing for the fun of a sniper game the way it is meant to be played.
