Heart-Shaped Elbow Patches
These elbow patches look so cute on sweaters and shirts.
Supplies:
Wool roving, 36 gauge roving needle, dense foam block, and heart-shaped cookie cutter

Heart-shaped fabric pieces and needle and thread
A patch on each knee of a pair of pants isn't going to look all that attractive, but when you put patches on the elbows of a shirt, it can look rather cute. There are a couple of ways to put patches on a shirt; one of them will take more time than the other. No matter what technique you decide on, you'll give a shirt a completely different look when you give it some elbow patches. And, when the patches are shaped like hearts the whole effect is even cuter.
Felting is done when you use a needle to go in and out on the fabric of the shirt elbow. As you do that, you push felt material between the threads of the shirt. It takes a long time to do the technique but the fuzzy results are very pretty. The technique is best done on a sweater or sweatshirt.
A cookie cutter can be helpful when doing the felting. Lay the heart shape on the elbow of the chosen shirt and put the wool roving in it. Fill the cookie cutter with the roving, tearing it apart and fluffing it, and use a 36 gauge roving needle to push the felt. Lay the shirt elbow and cookie cutter on a dense piece of foam so that, as you take the needle up and down, it has a place to go.
Start by pushing the needle down through the wool roving, the shirt, and the foam. Pull the needle up, move it slightly, and push it down again. Continue to do that, many times, until you've finished the heart shape. Heat an iron on the wool setting, dampen the felt heart, and iron it.
An easier way to make heart patches on the elbow of a shirt is to cut two hearts from cloth. It can be cut from felt, velvety material, or thin fabric. This technique can be done on nearly any shirt but isn't the best choice for a sweater. Position it on the sleeve and pin it. Use a needle and thread, and a blanket stitch, to sew the heart onto the fabric.
Sweet heart shapes on the elbows of a sweater, a Henley, or another long sleeve shirt, look so adorable. Whether you do the quick method, or the longer technique, you'll have an enjoyable time with the project.
