Chic on a Shoestring: How to Survive a Recession with Style
How, and where, to shop for affordable, top quality, stylish clothing during a recession.
A smart girl gets resourceful and creative. Today, it was bitterly cold where I live, in Maine, and I am not an LL Bean kind of gal. I left the house this morning wearing new, $90, Ralph Lauren dark wash, boot cut jeans, an 100% lambs wool, Gap, striped, turtleneck sweater , New, $70, Style and Co. Black ankle boots, an 100% wool, very warm, English plaid tweed, three-quarter length coat, in the lovely colors of deep pink, black, purple, and cream. I topped my going out outfit off with a lovely Laura Ashley, black velvet, Russian style hat. I was quite toasty and warm and I looked stunning, if I do say so, myself.
The entire cost of this ensemble? I paid $12 for the jeans, and $10 for the boots, the sweater, coat, hat, oh and my new, deep pink, knit glove were free. If I'd had to pay for the coat, hat, sweater and gloves, they would have cost a mere $36.00 total. So, $50 dollars for the complete outfit. None too bad, huh? Of course, I am not counting my undies... A new Victoria's Secret bra that I paid $8.50, and cute, new Holiday boy short panties, three for $6.00. WalMart does have it's place.
How do I manage to dress stylishly for so little? Get ready to take some notes. I am here to share a few secrets, but don't let them get around. I'd hate to have to compete for my steals and deals.
Barter Your Way Into New Outfit
I imagine that most women reading this want to know how I managed to get the aforementioned coat, hat, sweater and gloves for free. I acquired them by using the good, old fashioned, barter system. I took a load of my own, gently worn, used clothing into a local, high end, used clothing store. They got some new clothes for their shop. and I got $100 of store credit to use on whatever I like, whenever I like. Used clothing stores can be wonderful resources, but not all used clothing stores are created equally. It's a trash versus treasure endeavor, but if you're a discerning shopper, you can do quite well. Search around for a local used clothing store that sells very good quality, used clothing at prices that are easily within current economic reach.
What to do if the perfect, used clothing store is found, but that store doesn't offer a trade for credit system? Talk to the owner and see if he or she is open to the idea of a barter system of some sort. Enlist the voices, and help, of friends, if need be. Then be willing to part with some very gently worn, top notch clothing. It never hurts to ask, never. There is absolutely nothing to lose by asking, except, perhaps, some clothies that are just taking up closet space, and everything to gain.
Goodwill CAN Be A Good Deal, Rummage Sales, Too
A lot of people don't like the thought of Goodwill, or aren't willing to drive all over creation to go to rummage sales during the summer. If a fashionista on a budget is a bit adventurous, and has a few hours of spare time, shopping at Goodwill or rummage sales might be easier, and more fun, than one might think.
Goodwill is always a bit of a crap shoot, I have found. One has to be willing to go to Goodwill and find nothing, or fill a shopping cart. One never know when gold will be struck when shopping at a Goodwill store. I generally use Goodwill to find specific items that I want or need but, for which I don't wish to spend a fortune. This Fall plaid has been huge, but I found myself plaid-less. I discovered a gorgeous, 100% wool plaid blazer in excellent condition at a local Goodwill, and paid $5.99 for it. I also use Goodwill for around the house jeans, and cardigans for the winter. I've found some truly beautiful sweaters in my search for something more every day.
Driving around from lawn sale to lawn sale is not only time consuming, but expensive, especially with the current price of gasoline. This is where one needs to be smart and do their research. I only hit one rummage sale in a summer, and I plan for the one sale in advance. It's a huge, three day event, run by the local hospital auxiliary as a fund raiser. People donate all sorts of things all year long, and the deals are fantastic!
This year, I came away with a Forecaster of Boston, 100% wool, oatmeal colored, full length coat in perfect condition for $3.00, an adorable little zip up plaid jacket for $2.00, a pair of ankle boots and a pair of K-Swiss tennis shoes, $1.50 a pair and various, very nice quality sweaters for $1.00 each. Oh, I also got a great pair of Gloria Vanderbilt 'transition" jeans, for a buck, too. I was in between sizes.
Keep eyes and ears open for such, close to home, rummage sales. These types of rummage sales are often sponsored by churches, schools, and nonprofit organizations. Listen to word of mouth recommendations from friends. Make sure that any rummage sales chosen are said to be well stocked, and are of a good size, so that many fabulous bargains can be found in one place. If such a rummage sale simply cannot be found, then look in the newspaper for large, multifamily, or neighborhood rummage sales. Three tips for rummage sale shopping: Get there early, bring cash, and be ready for a crowd.
The Streets Of eBay Are Paved With Clothes...New Clothes.
While I truly enjoy having used clothing as a part of my wardrobe, the whole sharing and recycling idea of it, sometimes nothing will do but something new. This is when I hit eBay. If new is what one craves, or one simply likes to shop from the comfort of home, then skip the expensive, online catalog stores, and go to eBay, instead.
I love designer clothing, and what fashion plate doesn't? Brand new, designer clothing can be had on eBay, often for a song. The first thing that one needs to do is to find an excellent source, or two. What makes for an excellent source? Generally, they are large, online auction houses that list 1000+ items a day. These items may be overstocks, shelf pulls, and in some cases, store returns. In most cases, the clothes will be new, with tags. The selection of clothing is vast and the deals are amazing. From Oscar de la Renta, to Ralph Lauren, Liz Claiborne to Tahari, Alfani, Jones NY, and so many more brands, including new Victoria's Secret , Moda line of clothing and VS lingerie. Shoes, boots, and accessories are also there for the picking, often through the same sellers.
Once a great source is found, get ready to shop. Many of these large auction houses start almost every item at 99 cents. Since auctions can be addictive, before the shopping begins, set a limit on the of amount of money to spend on any one item. When I go on a spree, I try to have my average price per piece set at around $5.00, with shipping included in that cost. One will win some auctions at 99 cents, and for every 99 cent auction that is won, the more a fashion bug can spend on another, more coveted item. Look for a seller with an excellent feedback rating, good deals on combined shipping, and stop when the allotted amount of money is spent. Let me repeat the last comment; stop buying when it's time to stop. Care has to be taken not to get too caught up in the excitement of bidding on, and winning auctions. Ask me how I know this last bit of advise.
To find a great source, begin by doing an eBay search for Charter Club, Famous Catalog, Oscar or Alfani. If a seller is found with a large list of items from these various brand names, often times repeats of the same items in differing sizes, then the search may be over. I have many "two dollar outfits" from these types sellers, that would retail for closer to $200. Shhh... don't tell a soul once a wonderful source is found, as a good source is like a really good recipe, best kept secret.
The Ralph Lauren jeans, the Style and Co boots, and the VS bra all came from one of these large volume sellers. I have seven kids, five boys and two girls and I did all of my Christmas shopping through these select eBay sellers. With the exception of one of my sons shirts, I won all of their gifts at 99 cents. I paid $1.25 for the other sons shirt. For my daughters, I spent a bit more, as women's clothing tends to go for higher prices. Even after I had included the shipping cost, a ton of money, gasoline and time has been saved. I probably saved my sanity, too. I hate the mall.
To get the best deals, be willing to shop for another season's clothing or shop at the less popular and convenient times of the day. It's difficult to think about the need for shorts, a sun dress or a tank top in the middle of Winter, but such summery clothing will be needed in the blink of an eye, and Ralph Lauren for 99 cent? Just do it.
Finally, Everything Goes On Sale
It's hard to find a style conscious woman who doesn't adore either Victoria's Secret, Old Navy, Gap, JCrew, even LLBean. Love an item at an online catalog store? Then, wait for it. Delay the need for immediate gratification. That $60-$80 pair of VS jeans will go on sale, and so will those sexy pajamas, probably sooner than imagined.
I never shop for full priced items at these popular online stores, but rather head straight to the sale and clearance items. So, check out the new stuff, then decide how much money that will be parted with for an item. If a lady doesn't want to purchase that super chic find at full price, then, again, wait for it. It will go on sale, and the longer that one is willing to wait, the lower the price will go. It's sort of like playing the stock market. Be savvy about when to buy and when to wait a bit longer. I have a great pair of Kate fit, VS jeans that I paid $14.99 for, and VS jeans are never cheap.
I know that this all sounds like a lot of work, and perhaps, a total change in mindset, but in tough financial times, such as these, one must be willing to go the extra mile in the name of style and fashion. A little effort will go a long way in money saved, and what better way to put a smile on any woman's face during lean times than a with brand new, designer outfit bought for less than the cost of a couple of Grande mocha latte's at Starbucks? Happy shopping!
