Golf Club Review: The Mizuno MX-17 Iron
Great club from a great company.
Their irons are forged by one of the best foundries in the world and their quality control is second to none. But like a few other "players" equipment manufacturers, Mizuno is seeing that they also need to cater to the mid to high handicap player in order to keep up their market share.
The MX-17 is designed just for that purpose. When you see the Mizuno MX-17, you will find it hard to believe that this came from one of the greatest blade manufactures in the world. It's large cavity and thick sole look nothing like the MP-14's of the past, and is cast not forged. But what it does give you is one very easy to hit club that costs a lot less than the typical Mizuno Iron.
I hit these at the range last Summer and let me tell you, they do what they are advertised to do. Go high and go long! The deep cavity, offset and extremely low center of gravity in these irons make them very easy to get airborne, even with the long irons.
Match that with the stock True Temper Dynalite shaft and its a piece of cake to send these babies into the wild blue yonder. They Dynalite is a lightweight shaft with a soft tip section to help produce more "kick" at impact. This puts a lot of spin on the ball which helps it to get airborne quickly.
Of course, when testing I tried to work the ball with this set with little luck. I was able to hit some draws, and even a few low balls with this iron, but could not even come close to hitting a fade! They simply just want to go high and straight! They really are designed for the high handicap player, and Mizuno has done a great job creating a set that anyone can hit!
