Car Heaters: 3 Areas to Check Before Replacing It
Find out three things that might be causing your car heater not to work. They're easy to fix and won't cost you a lot either.
If the heater in your car isn't working, it's time to get it fixed. The weather is cooling down and in a few months you'll be suffering in extremely cold temperatures. However, before you run to a mechanic, check out three areas on your car first that might be causing your problem. Fixing them is inexpensive and easy. You can do it yourself or enlist the help of a friend. Here they are...
1. Check the amount of antifreeze in your car. Adding antifreeze seems so simple and it just might be your quick-fix answer. Why? A low coolant level can cause a heating system to break down because coolant isn't circulating properly into the heating core. So, if you can't remember the last time you've kept a maintenance appointment, it's time to buy a bottle.
2. Check for leaks in your radiator hose. If you have leaks in your radiator hose, coolant will leak and keep levels low. (See point one for the effects of low coolant levels.) You'll know if this is occurring if you open up the hood and smell a sweet odor near the hose accompanied by steam. Another way is just to check the coolant levels over a few days and see if they drop dramatically for no reason. (Tip addition: Check the radiator cap when you look at the hose to see if it's weak. This will add to the problem.)
3. Check your thermostat and make sure it's working. The thermostat in your car needs to work properly in order for your car to get heat. If it's stuck open, your car won't heat up. One way to tell if this is the case, is to start a cold engine and feel the upper radiator hose. If you feel coolant moving around inside the hose even though the car isn't warm, something is wrong. The thermostat is broken and it's time to repair or replace it.
In conclusion, before the weather gets too cold or you spend a lot of money, check your cars coolant levels, radiator hose and thermostat. If any of these items aren't in order, your car heater won't work. The good news is that they're all easy and cheap to fix, so you may not even need to go to a mechanic.
