The All New Golf - My Review - VW Golf MkVI
I take a look at the brand new VW Golf MkVI and give my review of it.
If you're looking for build quality, refinement and an excellent driving experience you can't beat the new Golf. Although it's not the best looking car on the market and it could be better packaged it has plenty to offer the driver looking for quality at a reasonable price.At first glance, the latest Golf looks little different to its predecessor. VW's designers have played it safe with the newcomer, making only minor visual modifications to a proven package. At the front there's a Scirocco style grille and headlamps, while larger tail-lights feature at the rear. The trim options are available on the S, SE and GT models. As the Mk VI is an entry-level car it doesn't have the distinctive chrome alloy wheels which are reserved for the top-of-the-range versions.
In its favour though, the car does have the same premium feel interior cabin as the S, SE and GT which few cars in this sector can match. There's nothing clever or exciting about the layout, but the quality of the materials and strong build are as good as more expensive executive models. However, buyers looking for ultimate practicality will have to look elsewhere as the Mk 1's boot at 350-litres is one of the smallest in the class. Air-conditioning and a trip computer are included in all models and if you pick the SE or GT you'll also be treated to cruise control.
For the moment engine choice is limited to just six units. Petrol fans can choose from four powerplants, including the punchy and efficient 158bhp 1.4-litre TSI unit that features both a turbo and a supercharger. The car is also available with VW's new 2.0-litre common-rail diesel motor with either 108bhp or 138bhp. In its more powerful guise the Mk VI will sprint from standstill to 60mph in an impressive 9.3 seconds. An even more rapid 168bhp oil-burner is set to join the line-up giving drivers a more supped-up driving experience. However, buyers seeking true hot hatch thrills will have to wait until the 208bhp GTI arrives later this year.
Get behind the wheel of a MK VI and it's immediately clear that refinement has been made a priority. Wind, road and engine noise are kept to a minimum, making the Golf a relaxing drive over long distances. Turn into a corner and the German car displays great composure and strong grip, but lacks ultimate feedback. Buyers wanting a more responsive driving experience can pick the GT, which gets 15mm lower sports suspension. There's also the option of VW's hi-tech Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) damping system, which offers separate sport, normal and comfort suspension settings. All versions come with either a five or six-speed manual gearbox, while the slick shifting DSG dual clutch transmission is a more costly option.
On paper, the Golf looks pricy compared to its rivals. However, it also feels more expensive than other family hatches, thanks to its solid build and high quality cabin. Running costs make the car a good buy as the oil burners manage around 58mpg and push out less than 130g/km CO2 putting the car in the lowest road tax bracket of £120 a year. You'll also benefit when it's time to trade-in, with predicted residual values of nearly 50 percent for diesel-engine models.
With a global emphasis on making cars environmentally-safe as possible, VW has responded by producing a new Golf which has been awarded a 5-star rating under the new tough EuroNCAP tests. Buyers wanting the lowest emissions and fuel use should stick to the diesels. However, the 158bhp 1.4-litre TSI petrol manages to return 44.8mpg and produces a respectable 145g/km of CO2. Safety is also as high a priority as making cars environmentally-safe. All models get seven airbags and ESP as standard, while GT versions benefit from a tyre pressure monitoring system.
