Skechers Fitness Group Shape Ups Advertisements
Sex in advertising is nothing new but with more tush than foot in the recent Skechers Shape Ups ad, the sneaker company seems to be sending strange messages.
Which has been fine! This was a largely untapped market in the "Just Do It" Nike of Andre Agassi, Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, and of course Michael Jordan. As Reebok was busy letting "You, Be, You," Skechers was latently slipping in the backdoor and running off with your wife.
Times have changed and Skechers still wants that coveted market share. So Skechers has introduced this new category of shoe; the Skechers Fitness Group. Skechers Fitness Group has shoes for walking (everyday activity), training (maximum calorie burning), trail (rugged wear), running (extra intensity), and work (all day support).
Sounds fairly pedestrian, right? Nothing too offensive. Until you get a gander at this advertisement for Skechers Fitness Group. It's the back-half torso and head of this woman in jeans. There are a few sneakers up by her head but there are not even any feet in this sneaker advertisement! The eye in this ad is drawn towards this girls curvaceous behind. I would imagine that this girl in blue jeans falls under the "everyday activity" portion of the Skechers Fitness Group. No way is this girl doing any kind of training, trail hiking, or running, apparently.
While sex is in everything, I get it, one really has to wonder about who Skechers are targeting with these ads? Girls who want to have a full fanny so that guys eyes in the mall will wander from this ad to their behind? Guys to be on the lookout for women in Skechers as they are nesters? Some may label my thinking as narrow or pedantic but this ad was thought up in a room somewhere for a multitude of reasons.
As we try and ponder these larger truths, whatever your feelings on commitment, it would be wise for guys to keep on the lookout for young girls at your local mall in mommy jeans and Skechers. As Sir-Mix-a-Lot reminds us, the heftiest behinds return some of the greatest rewards.
