Writers Guild Widens Access
The Writers Guild of America West’s Writer Access Project offered 10 mid-level writers an opportunity to be seen by industry executives. Offering glimpses of participants’ work, the initiative inspires a wider scope for hiring practices.
At a recent appearance at the LA Times Festival of Books, author Anna Quindlen talked about her hiring at the New York Times. To anyone who thinks that affirmative action places inferior candidates, she challenged, "I'm that second-rate person."
There was nothing second-rate about the pilots presented at the Writers Guild of America West's Writer Access Project presentation April 30. Co-presented with SAG-AFTRA's National Ethnic Employment Opportunities Committee, SAG-AFTRA EEO amp; Diversity Department, and Casting Society of America's Diversity Committee, the night included ten snippets of pilots from honorees of the initiative which is "designed to identify excellent, diverse writers with television experience."
In any event in which words meant for the screen are read on-stage, comedy will always triumph in popularity. And that held true for this event with Lena Waithe's Twenties, Geetika Lizardi's Sofa King, and Thomas Wong's Queen generating the most laughs and interest from the audience. Tia Carrere, Gedde Watanabe, and a slew of industry executives attended with TV actors Charlie Schlatter, Anger Management's James Black, and Newsroom's Kelen Coleman amongst the actors lending their voice to the festivities.
The most commercially viable would be Waithe's African American version of Girls. The writer said she wrote it because she saw a dearth of African American female representation on TV that fell somewhere in the middle of Nene Leakes (the worst) and Olivia Pope (the best). Only a few scenes were performed, and Waithe's cleverness was evident though she chose to excerpt a scene that ended with not a bang but a bust out of Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
Full scripts are available online which helps the dramas recoup some favor-much required tension is lost from abrupt endings of extracted scenes. Wong shrewdly showed his comedic sensibility in his Queen which is a drama about New York drag queens. Wong was a Disney/ABC Writing Fellow and most recently was named the first Fox Writers Intensive Fellow. Disney/ABC's guidance in cultivating presentation skills was evident with Wong's intro to his excerpt. Slyly weaving many an innuendo-"the life of a drag queen is a pain in the ass and not the good one"-Wong was penetratingly charming, most definitely someone desired in a writers room. His script had plenty of wit, elevating his character development and action progression.
It'd be unfair to offer much more than surface-level critiques of what was presented, but it'd be more than appropriate to assert that there's a wide world of talent available to decision makers for whom it's incumbent to look beyond a surface categorization.
