Choosing the Right Size Motorcycle for You

Many riders, when considering their first motorcycle, are attracted to the large machines sitting new on showroom floors. With the rise of adventure motorcycles, these machines have grown in size until some have engines are the same size as small cars.

Many riders, when considering their first motorcycle, are attracted to the large machines sitting new on showroom floors. With the rise of adventure motorcycles, these machines have grown in size until some have engines are the same size as small cars, luggage too large to bring onto a airplane, and enough complication in design and engineering even a simple oil change can no longer be done in the driveway at home.

When I was shopping for my first motorcycle I limited myself to a smaller machine. Over my 22 years of riding I have owned both large and small bikes, and traveled all over north and south America.

Midsized bikes, around 650ccs to 800ccs are sometimes shrugged off as "women's bikes" or "okay, but lacking in power." Bike smaller still are tagged with "nice for a beginner" or "a kids bike." Not something a new rider wants to be tagged with, whether true or not.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation teaches classes all over the United States, and those classes use motorcycles around 250ccs. These bikes, as well as being inexpensive to buy and insure, are lightweight. The seats are generally lower to the ground than their larger cousins, making them easier to get on,and handle when stopped. They are excellent bikes to start learning on, but as soon as riders have completed the class they immediately (if not sooner) want to purchase a larger machine.

Larger motorcycles do have some advantages, especially if planning longer trips. While smaller bikes can manage interstate speeds, the engine will have to work harder, which means more vibration. Larger machines also tend to have better wind protection for the rider, so you get less tired riding it. On the down side of the ledger, they are much heavier, which can cause problems for riders (even experienced ones) at slow speeds or in parking lots. They are more expensive to insure, get fewer miles to the gallon, and are more expensive to purchase it the first place.

Smaller bikes, 500ccs or smaller, are less expensive to buy, less to insure, and are easy to handle in parking lots and slow speeds. For urban commuting, running errands, or day trips such a bike may be all a rider ever actually needs. With their light weight they are easily wheeled around by hand, and are small enough to easily fit into tight parking spaces, where it is legal to do so. With some planning on the part of the rider, smaller bikes can be used for longer trips. If the rider is willing, then there is no limit to how far one can be ridden. Riders have managed to tour the entire United States on a 50cc scooter, which would make a 250cc Honda Rebel seem overpowered.

Midsized bikes, which used to be between 500 and 700ccs though in recent years anything smaller than 1000cc can be called midsized, are available in all types and styles to meet the desires of any rider. Smaller and lighter than the big bikes, they are large enough to manage long interstate journeys without the strain a smaller engine would suffer. They are sometimes lighter than larger bikes, though care must be taken, sometimes the weight difference is so minor as to not matter. Other times the 'midsized' version of a larger motorcycle is just de-tuned - otherwise the same engine and weight, or has the same frame (and so height) with a different engine. These hybrids aren't true midsized bikes, and care should be taken before buying one.

In the end the choice of motorcycle is intensely personal, and despite research and care the rider may find the first bike purchased isn't appropriate for what is needed. Until the rider has a bike and the opportunity to explore what sort of riding he wants to do it is very difficult to know which bike it right. This is one of the reasons many recommend buying an inexpensive used machine for the first motorcycle, allowing the rider to get a better sense of their needs before taking out a loan, or spending a great deal on a motorcycle which doesn't fit the needs of the rider.
