B. F. Clyde's Cider Mill
One of the greatest activities for the whole family is to watch apple cider being made the old-fashioned way with a 19th century giant apple press, and then go into a general store afterwards and buy some of that cider to enjoy afterwards.
Although I don't live nearby anymore, B. F. Clyde's is still in operation, and as such is one of the few working cider mills in the country. It is the on of the oldest of all of them, and there aren't that many of them left. B. F. Clyde's Cider Mill began operation in 1898 and is open from 9:00 to 5:00 for guided tours from August through October. The mill is located on a side road in the country, off Rt. 184, and parking can be rather challenging during the busy fall season on the weekends. Often I would drive by there on my way home and see vehicles parked along the side of the road.
Within the mill area itself, there is a building where dozens of apples are dumped onto a screen and then mashed by a big thing that comes down from a machine. It is totally fascinating to watch. Later during the cider making process it all gets filtered, the skins, seeds, stems, and other undesirable parts of the apples are removed, the cider is further refined and pasteurized, put into plastic jugs, and sold in the general store part of B. F. Clyde's, along with several of their other applicious products.
The modern facility is owned and operated by the grandson of Benjamin Clyde, who began pressing apples for cider in 1891, rented or purchased his own equipment in1897, and opened his own business, which has remained in the family for more than a century. B. F. Clyde's, in addition to being one of the country's oldest surviving cider mills, has the distinction of being the only mill in operation to use a screw press - later cider mills utilized hydraulic equipment.
