Tips for Spiking Your Hair with Hair Wax
Learn how to create soft spikes in your hair using hair wax.
Well, the truth is the secret to stylish spikes actually lies in hair wax. This unique product will allow you to spike your hair easily without it coming out looking wet or stiff. You'll be able to create definition between the spikes without winding up with a stiff, unapproachable helmet head.
Here are some tips on how to spike your hair with hair wax to get you started.
Get the Right Product
The key to creating natural looking spikes is to start with the right product. Most stores that carry hair styling products will carry hair wax as well. Head out to your local store and look through the product that they offer. Be sure whatever product you choose is specifically labeled as a hair wax.
Also, read the bottle or tub to make sure that it will work well with your type of hair. Some wax is made for thick hair while other waxes are made for fine hair. Some popular brands you can look for include Bed Head, Paul Mitchell, FX Special Effects, Garnier Fructis or Bumble And Bumble.
Apply the Wax
Start with barely damp hair. Scoop out a very small amount of wax on your fingertips and rub it into your fingers and palms. The key at this point is not to overdo it and use too much product. Using too much hair wax will just weigh your hair down and will make it harder to spike. You can always apply more if you need it, but once it is on your head it is difficult to get off if you have applied to much.
Run your fingers through your hair to evenly distribute the wax. Try to make sure to get a nice even coating over all your hair that you want to spike.
Style Your Hair
Using your finger tips, start creating spikes in your hair. Depending on the style you are going for you can opt for larger, more carefree spikes or you can create small spikes that are more precise. Just keep playing with it until you achieve the look you are going for.
If it isn't looking right just smooth it out and start over again. If you are having trouble getting the spikes to hold you can go ahead and apply a little more wax if necessary.
Once you have the look you are going for stop and let your hair dry for about 10-15 minutes. After it is dry the spikes should hold well for the rest of the day.
Doing this process will give you soft spikes that aren't hard and stiff like spikes from gel would be. It's a much softer, more natural look. Have fun with it and play around to see what styles you can come up with.
