Why M. Night Shyamalan is the Most Underrated Person in the World

It may be a far stretch to assume that M. Night Shyamalan is the most underrated person in the world. But his movie directing most often gets a bad rap...

Not many people realize that M. Night is the son of two doctors. Growing up the son of two physicians has allowed him to infuse a certain authenticity in his movies. By age 8, this young man was already well into his filmmaking "career." There isn't much known about M. Night Shyamalan. Details on his private life are kept out of the media. As a matter of fact, audiences rarely hear ANYTHING about M. Night unless he has new film coming out. Though considered by many as one of the best movie directors Hollywood has seen, his cinematic dexterity is often overlooked by the masses. There are several reasons why Mr. Shyamalan is the most underrated director in the world. But for the sake of time, I'll simply name three.

M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN TAPS INTO FAMILIAR CHILDHOOD THEMES

The beauty of M. Night's ability to direct is in his proclivity to capture the nuances of childhood. In an age where video game packaging is stamped with "maturity" warning labels, it's refreshing to come across a movie director who's in touch with his inner child.

His film "Unbreakable" released in 2000, presented a twist for viewers who wondered in the beginning why Bruce Willis' character was virtually indestructible. The film, also starring Oscar nominee, Samuel Jackson, veered in a different direction than his 1999 hit, "The Sixth Sense." Viewers, upon discovering that Elijah (Jackson) and David (Willis) were actually the polar opposites in a true-to-form comic novel, were first presented with Shyamalan's brilliant unveiling of superheroes come to life.

M. Night further displayed his cinematic mastery in 2020's "Lady in the Water." Trailers for this film were fairly sinister, giving viewers the impression that Shyamalan had returned to more frightening themes. But once "Lady" hit theaters audiences and critics both had less than stellar reviews. Roger Ebert of the Sun Times even hailed it a "sodden fairytale." But many failed to realize that the beauty of "Lady in the Water" was in the fact that once again M. Night had used his genius to bring an imaginary children's fable to the screen for adults to enjoy.

M. NIGHT'S STORYTELLING IS ALWAYS "EXACT"

One thing that Mr. Shyamalan has successfully done is create plausible stories out of implausible themes. He does so by skillfully weaving together certain subtleties so that they create a full picture. For instance, in "Signs" (2002), M. Night is careful to make sure audiences focus on the abundance of half-full water glasses left throughout the Hess household. Mel Gibson's character, Graham, chides his youngest child for leaving the glasses all over the house. Only later in the film does the viewer realize that the water glasses are actually clues leading to the family's strategic fight against the alien invaders. In effect, M. Night has been trying to suggest to viewers that the Hess children are much more in tune with their surroundings than the adults.

M. Night Shyamalan also uses things like color to get his point across. All throughout the film, "The Sixth Sense", he uses the color red to symbolize the presence of one of his deceased characters. The color is never blatant; it is used in scenes where subtlety is of the utmost importance. For example, we see Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) attempting to open the basement door. Audiences notice the red doorknob, but do not think too much of it. Later in the film, we see Crowe's wife, Anna (Olivia Williams) shivering beneath a red blanket. It is during this part of the movie that we realize that Willis' character has been deceased all along. Ultimately the beauty of M. Night's direction is his appreciation for the art of storytelling.

M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN IS ALWAYS FULL OF SURPRISES

Suffice it to say, M. Night is considered one of the masters of suspense despite his not having directed too many major motion pictures. However, it was his introduction of "The Sixth Sense" that provided him with this illustrious title. Once viewers ascertained that Shyamalan's main character was in fact, dead throughout the film, he earned the respect of many in the filmmaking community. The problem is that audiences craved the same type of suspense in M. Night's following films.

Subsequent films held their own measures of suspense. Both critics and fans have derided Shyamalan for presenting moral themes under the guise of "horror." But in fact, creating "horror" movies has never been M. Night's primary goal. In 2004, his release of "The Village" provoked much anticipation from movie-goers. In the trailer, glimpses of a mysterious hooded monster scampering across television screens was enough to have fans salivating over their next frightening M. Night experience. Yet again, this intense director chose to flip the script by turning the entire movie's setting upside down. Discovering that the "ancient" town was no more than an Amish "Truman Show" disappointed more fans instead of delighting them.

Some critics have named him as one of the better filmmakers around, citing his deft filming abilities as reason for praise. But in a society that thrives on CGI animation, extreme car chases, and obvious dialogue, it's not too far-reaching to understand how M. Night Shyamalan is truly the most underrated film director in the world.
