A New, Super Fast Transition Lens for Sunglasses Has Been DIscovered
Scientists have developed glass lenses which can instantly change color via the use of a tiny electric current. This new technology will be used by the military and will also be offered to the public.
I have to wear glasses, and I hate them. The reason is pretty simple. I spend a lot of time outside, walking back and forth to various places on campus and going in / out of the lab. My eyes are pretty sensitive to light (they always have been) so I tend to wear sunglasses when I'm outside, or even in a bright room inside. It's not the height of fashion, but it works for me. Since I have to wear prescription glasses (I can't stand contacts), every time I enter or leave a bright area I have to switch: sunglasses come off and glasses go on, or vice versa. It's such a pain, and I know I'm not the only one who thinks this way.
Optical glass companies do offer a "transition" lens which will darken upon exposure to bright light, and which then lighten up when there is less ambient light. I've tried this option, and it isn't feasible. There's too much of a delay period. For at least 30 seconds to a minute, I'm stumbling around in a dark area after coming in from a sunny outside, waiting for my glasses to adjust themselves to the new light level.
Fortunately, scientists at the University of Connecticut have found the answer and have published their findings in the prestigious Journal of Materials Chemistry. The researchers developed a plastic material (a polymer mixture) that instantly (within a second) changes from dark to clear. There are possibilities for a range of colors, also. The secret is that these new materials are electrochromic. This means that the lens changes color when a small electric current (supplied by a tiny battery in the glasses frame) flows through them. Normal "transition" lenses are photochromic - they change their color in response to the amount of light hitting them. These new materials don't have a delay period; the change is instant. As a result, they offer a much more pleasant consumer experience.
Unlike the photochromic materials currently used (which apply a film to the surface of the lens), these new materials require two sets of lenses for each eye, separated by a tiny gap. The glasses are made as normal but in the last step, the newly developed plastic material is injected into the gap between each lens. This may result in a slightly thicker glass than the photochromic sunglasses currently offered, but I'm sure that technology will improve and the glasses will soon shed any extra weight. Upon the application of a small electric charge (which can be controlled by the wearer of the glasses or automated, based on light conditions) the polymer "filler" changes it's color and transparency instantly.
The military is obviously interested. Soldiers fighting in a bright, sunny environment might need sunglasses to protect their vision and to spot potential threats, but if they're then forced to duck into a dark entrance way or run into a dark room, they can't afford to have their vision impaired in any way. They certainly can't wait 30 seconds for "transition" lenses to adjust to the new environment. This new technology will allow them to go from dark sunglasses to perfectly clear glass lenses in just a split second.
