8 Tips to Becoming a Great Senior Golf Pro

There is an increasing number of seniors who are playing golf more than they ever have. Here are the most important eight things seniors need to remember while playing golf.

Attitude

Attitude is definitely the thing you have to consider when being a senior pro. Whether you are planning on working your way up to playing in tournaments or whether you have been playing in tournaments since you were younger, you need to keep a positive attitude.

As people become older, they start to lose some things that younger people have. Their eyesight may be getting worse. They may be noticing that they aren't as strong. They may notice that they have more aches and pains in their joints, causing them to have a harder time when holding the golf club or bending their knees for just the right stance. However, if you are determined to play golf at a pro level you need to be able to focus on the positives in your game and not the negatives.

When you are playing in a senior tournament, remember that most of these people are going through the changes in their bodies just like you are. Keep telling yourself that you are just as good, if not better, than they are and that you can do this. You don't want to enter a tournament with a "if I win" attitude. You must carry yourself as though you know that you are going to win and make yourself believe that you can win the tournament. As with anyone, young or old, if you believe you are a winner, chances are you will be a winner.

Concentration And Focus

Concentration and focus is something else that may be dwindling as you get older. To help maintain the concentration and focus you will need in order to win a tournament, make sure you get plenty of practice. While you are on the golf course, practice on shutting out all noises that might distract you when you are making that crucial putt. Tune out your friends talking or any background noises. Hone in on the ball and keep your focus on it.

Even as other golfers are taking their shots, try to pay attention to where your ball is and plan your shot. When it is your time to step up, do so with utter confidence. Having already planned what club you will use for the shot, exactly how you are going to approach the shot and follow through. Don't hesitate. Wondering if you are doing the right thing will only mess up you concentration and focus and you will end up with the ball somewhere other than in the hole.

Recovery Of The Game

So you are in the middle of a game and are doing really well. All of the sudden, your shot does not go the way you thought it would and you end up with a scratch shot. Don't get discouraged. As in any game, you need to shake it off and move on to the next shot. Never dwell on the past. If you are too busy dwelling on the bad shot you just made, then you will follow it up with another equally bad one. If, however, you tell yourself that everyone screws up and that you can't have a perfect game, then put it behind you and move on, you stand a greater chance of doing well on your next shot.

Practice

Anyone who wants to do well in any sport, be they old or young, needs to practice, practice, practice. No one ever got to the top of their game by sitting around and watching television all day until heading off to the football field, basketball court, or in your case, the links. Nothing comes easy, so if you want to be a great golfer you have to spend the time to make that happen. The more you practice, the better you become.

Fitness

Even if you have been playing golf all of your life and you have been staying fit, this does not mean that there is not room for improvement. In fact, as you age, your body needs more exercise to keep it in shape that when you were younger. So take that one extra walk around the block, or jog a few miles further than you normally would. This will not only help you stay fit for your golf game, but you will feel much better in the long run.

Technique And Foundation

As golfers age, their techniques and the foundations on which they have played the game need to change. Instead of concentrating on the mechanics of the game, they tend to rely on their tactical and practical strategies. A senior's entire game will depend on how well they tee off. As they get older, they will need to change the way they position themselves over the ball. Once you find the perfect position, you may need to change this over a bit of time and keep doing this over and over again. Even if you have played golf for years, this is still a change that will come.

Balance

You are a senior golf player so you need to learn that the way you present yourself to the ball will have a huge impact on the game. As you have gotten older, you have noticed that the way you used to stand is not cutting it any longer. You will need to change your stance since you will be moving differently when you swing. Many complications that arise in your older years will affect this. If you have back problems, for instance. You want to find the best position that will not only help you keep your balance when you swing, but will also help you get a better shot.

Distance

Again, as you get older, your health will give you more problems when you golf. Your muscles may not be as toned and just using your arms when you swing will not get the distance you once used to get. However, if you are remember your positioning of your body for balance, then the distance will come as well. You may also need to buy some new equipment. The clubs you used to use might not be what you need any longer. By purchasing the right clubs for yourself and remembering how to stand to get the most of your swing, you will be able to get the distance on your shot that you always managed before you got older.

Keeping these tips in mind should allow you to play the game so that your handicap will the same or even better than when you were younger. With a good attitude, new equipment and by following these other tips, you could win the senior golf tournament that you are entering. Good luck!
