Use of Geothermal Heating is Threatening Humanity's Future
A fun, new concept involving Mars, climate change, and the future of earth.
As our solar system ages, the cores of its planets are cooling down. With earth being relatively closer to the sun than, say Mars, it takes longer to cool than those more distant planets. But, inevitably, the earth will look very much like Mars. Mars' internal core used to be molten, like Earth's, but it cooled millions of years ago. As a result, the planet's magnetic field died. Without a magnetic field to protect it, Mars has been devoid of all life and is most likely incapable of supporting life without a magnetic field.
Lately, there has been a movement to tap into Earth's geothermal energy for use in generating electricity and in the heating of buildings. I would suggest this is a very short-sighted concept. Extracting heat from the earth's core will cause it to cool more rapidly and will lead to a premature demise for the planet.
Instead, I would suggest that we should be using the earth's core only for geothermal cooling. That is, we should be pumping heat back into the ground to help extend the life of Earth's molten core. This would help slow the core's cooling and extend the amount of time Earth will remain habitable.
One argument is "earth is huge, there's no way these small projects could have a global impact." I would suggest that's exactly what people were saying many years ago when the concept of global warming came about. We now see that small impacts absolutely do add up to major, global impacts.
Do I expect the Earth's core to cool so rapidly that we can't live here in one hundred years? Absolutely not. But with a growing trend toward the use of geothermal heat, we could be reducing the planet's life by thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of years as we try to provide heat and electricity for an ever-growing human population. Humans, and their descendant life forms, will be on earth for many years to come. We need to work together now to ensure their exploration of space is out of curiosity, not necessity.
If engineers were to follow this concept, it would actually be a win-win for the planet and for humanity. Removing excess heat from the atmosphere and placing it underground will delay the effects of global warming. This could buy us a little more time to figure out how to solve that problem.
