Drainage Considerations for Your Golf Course
Some basics on golf course drainage issues.
Once the first phase of grading and shaping is complete the next step is to install catch basins, subsurface drain lines, and dry wells as required. There must be enough drain outlets provided and it is important to ensure that they are of the appropriate diameter in relation to the water volume they are intended to handle. A course can be outfitted with miles of drain lines, but if they are of too small a diameter it is all for naught. Always consult with a drainage specialist or engineer for this part of the construction to ensure that factors such as line size, depth, and spacing are properly accounted for.
At the base of slopes that are situated just above the fairway it may be necessary to install interceptor lines to collect water from seepage veins, or occasional springs that may develop. If these areas are not factored in there may be future issues including rutting, unmowable turf, loss of turf cover from scalping, and overall poor playing conditions for the golfer.
When considering drainage, bunkers must also be addressed. Bunkers by nature are depressions in the landscape and therefore have the capacity to hold water. Magnify that by the fact that the surrounding topography in many cases slopes towards the depression of the bunker and you have the potential to collect allot of drainage water. Due to the surrounding topography it is very important to install intercept drain lines to direct and divert excess water away from the bunker. Failing to address this will create a myriad of problems including, sand contamination, erosion of flashings, and ultimately the need for premature bunker renovation projects. To divert the water in these surrounds, a small overland swale can be carved in, or subsurface drain lines can be installed upslope from the bunker in question.
Inside the bunker itself it is important to ensure that there is adequate fall to facilitate internal drainage. Be certain to create a 2-3% slope along the floor of the bunker to ensure that the water travels towards the center installed drain tile. In many bunkers only a single drain tile will be required, however when a bunker is larger or oddly shaped, a more complex series of drain tiles will be required to achieve proper drainage. The most common pattern to use in these situations is a herringbone layout (see diagram). In most instances 3 or 4inch perforated drain tile is preferable. Always make sure that your tile exits into the rough, and that you are compliant with any local or state regulations pertaining to waste water and runoff.
Remember that drain lines are subject to contamination, and crushing so it is important to monitor and test them throughout their functioning life to avoid any drainage issues. A good idea is to create access points in the lines for the purpose of flushing annually or as required.
