Tiger Woods Nike Commercial Video Parody More Believable
The Tiger Woods Nike commercial has only been in circulation for a day and already there are several parodies on YouTube and other Web sites poking fun at the ad and/or the scandalized golfer. Not that he hasn't been through the wringer before. From...
The Tiger Woods Nike commercial is 30 seconds long. It depicts a somber, even stoic Tiger Woods facing the camera. The entire video is shot in black-and-white, a nod to no-nonsense thinking and right-and-wrong understanding. But Tiger Woods never speaks. He's as tight-lipped in the Nike commercial as he has been regarding the entire mistresses scandal. Instead, the voice of his father, Earl Woods, is heard throughout the commercial.
"Tiger, I am more prone to be inquisitive, to promote discussion. I want to find out what your thinking was. I want to find out what your feelings are. And did you learn anything."
The Nike commercial fails in its reach to depict a man looking for his moral compass and striving to carry on. And thus far, with regard to all these the things Earl Woods lists -- discussion, thinking, feelings, and learning -- the public has been left with very little or no information.
So where there's a vacuum, some comedian will unfailingly fill in the blanks.
Of all the parodies, the best seem to be on FunnyOrDie.com. There is one that bills itself as the "unedited" version of the Nike commercial, where the voiceover (none other than Matt Stone of "South Park" fame) at the end whispers, "Don't do it" over the Nike logo. But there is another that seems to capture Tiger Woods in a more believable light and far more believable than the original Nike commercial. The video uses the same visual image, but the voiceover is that of Morgan Freeman's "rehabilitation" soliloquy in "The Shawshank Redemption," arguably one of his better performances in a career of stellar performances.
"Rehabilitation? Well, now, let me see... You know, I don't have any idea what that means. What do you really want to know? Am I sorry for what I did? Rehabilitated? It's just a bulls**t word. Because, to tell you the truth, I don't give a s**t."
And, somehow, even though it is a spoof, the FunnyOrDie.com parody video seems so much more honest than the actual Nike commercial. Morgan Freeman's voiceover seems to go better with Tiger Woods' expression throughout the commercial than does Earl Woods' words, which only make the golfer look like an admonished child that is being told to rethink a mistake or transgression.
Why? Because, to tell you the truth, given Tiger Woods' reticence throughout the years, his ability to lead a double life (of which he has admitted to without specifics), and his "you-can't-ask-me-that" attitude, it isn't very difficult to believe that the golfer doesn't "give a s**t."
