Golf Tip: How to Choose the Path to the Green
The correct path to the green is the one with the fewest obstacles between you and the green. It should also offer a good angle toward the green for the subsequent shot.
The correct path to the green is the one with the fewest obstacles between you and the green. It should also offer a good angle toward the green for the subsequent shot. If you don't have both of these things in hand, then you need to rethink the shot you have in mind.
When we talk about the "right" angle to the green, we're talking about giving yourself a chance to play toward the widest part of the green. In this sense, we're talking about the "wide" part of the green being the part with the most room between the edge of the green and the hole. When you play to this wide part, you give yourself the best chance of getting up and down if you miss the green. (If you have a green light situation and a wedge, you can still tire at the flag.)
In case you're not clear about it, we're talking about hitting what are commonly referred to as "layup" shots. Trust us on this, they are not the easiest shots in the game, and they require your full concentration. The quickest way to add strokes to your score is to just grab a club and whack it in the general direction of the green. We can't emphasize this point enough: When you decide to play a positional layup shot you have to bear down on it as much as any other shot you play.
The first thing you have to do is pick the spot you want as your target. That spot should have three characteristics: It should offer you an angle playing "in" toward the wide part of the green as defined above; it should offer you a fairly flat lie (and of course should be in the fairway); finally, it should leave you at a distance where you can swing fully with one of your short irons. You should never put yourself between clubs just because you weren't thinking about it. We realize it's inevitable you're going to end up between clubs, but if you can avoid it by properly planning your layup shot, you should do so.
These types of shots are called layup shots because you are laying up not only short of the green but short of any trouble as well. This has an impact on your dub selection for the layup shot First, you want to make sure you're well short of any trouble you cannot easily carry. We'd say well short means at least 20 yards. (And make sure you factor in the wind, your lie, and the slope of the ground!) Second, when playing your layup shot you should select a dub you can hit for the full measure. Please don't try to hit a little half shot with your 3-wood. Hit a full-blooded 5-iron instead, or whatever dub may get you to your target spot. You want to make a full swing on these shots because you'll reduce the likelihood of the poor swings that players routinely make when just 'slapping something up around the green."
The last step before playing a layup shot is to go through your full preshot routine. No matter how "intermediate" the shot seems to you, it can still get you into trouble. The best way to give it the importance it deserves is to go through your full routine prior to making your swing. That includes making a good practice swing. If we had a dollar for every time we've seen a player walk up to a layup shot and just slap it without taking a practice swing, we could buy Greg Norman's airplane.
