When Role Models Go Bad
Two examples of how role models are creating a negative influence on young girls.
Britney Spears
When Britney Spears popped into television back on the Mickey Mouse Club, she was the vision of perfection. A sweet, well learned southern girl with a killer singing voice amongst the talents needed to perform the various skits required for the then popular television show. Like all the other girls on the show, she was a pure delight to watch and admire across the airwaves. Nobody expected this sweet darling to ultimately end up being a huge disappointment to those who once admirered her.
Nobody really worried when she came out with her first single. In fact, most people were downright amazed with how beautiful she was and how her talents had escalated into something some considered absolutely wonderful. Not only was her singing brilliant for a teenager, but, she could dance.
However, there was quite a little hatred met with her song, as her video showed her in a very, very short school skirt outfit. While probably easiest for her to do some of her dance moves in a shorter skirt, it probably wasn't the wisest move she could have taken. In fact, several of her other videos included quite the interesting outfit, such as the red leather bonadage-like outfit worn in a later video.
Fast forward to her deciding it being a good idea to marry her childhood friend in Las Vegas, to the end of that marriage within hours. That, truthfully, was one of the least harmful things she's displayed publically (as well as to younger girls) in retrospect. When she did this little stunt it merely showcased her immaturity and inability at that time to understand and respect the seriousness that is marriage.
Her marriage to Kevin seemed to be an attempt to prove to all others that she was mature enough to handle such a responsibility when lo and behold, a short time later the world hears, "It's a boy!" for the couple.
By now, it was a 50/50 situation with Britney. She was a mother and things seemed to be going positively for her. However, then came the 'almost as bad as Jacko' baby danger story. Britney, in an attempt to flee, drives off with her son in her lap. Not only was this little dish of publicity bad for her, period, it also showed a sense of immaturity and lack of understanding how dangerous her situation was.. not to mention how the outcome could have turned out should something have gone wrong.
Now it seemed Britney couldn't do much worse. Boy, we were mistaken. Britney gives birth to a second son and not even three months later, she's filing for divorce. If anything, I'll say the girl has guts. However, as a result of her becoming 'free' again, she pulled the latest stunt of going out with a few friends and having no regard for under garments. Young girls do not need to see that. In fact, nobody needed to see that. It, perhaps, was the last straw in many people having an ounce of respect for Britney. She has been given chance after chance to redeem herself and at only 25, has dug herself into a deep hole of disrespect.
Lindsay Lohan
I remember a young, cute freckled redhead doing a remake of a Disney movie. I couldn't help but have hope for this young girl. She was spunky, adorable and a very talented actress. Even better, she appeared almost out of nowhere. I can not remember her before that movie, but everything she's done after is burned into my head.
This young woman blew everyone away with her sudden turn from acting to singing. Not only was she an extremely talented actress, but also a very good singer. In all honesty, I was impressed that the girl could belt out a tune.
Unfortunately, as Lindsay approached legal age, she took a downward dive. The once healthy, smiling redhead had turned overnight into a too-thin diva. She denied any eating problems and not too long after there were whispers developing about her passing out.
Then came the acting dilemma and her over-partied lifestyle. Staying out too late, drinking and having a blast is fine, but a horrible example for young girls hoping to have a healthy and productive life. In fact, Lindsay was warned about her lifestyle and behavior, nearly losing her role in a movie due to her immaturity.
However, just when we couldn't imagine her immaturity with her body and career taking a dive, on comes the over-dramatic love life. It seemed every few weeks she was seeing a new boyfriend and rumors of engagements began flying. It seemed that no matter what she did, she was scrutinized with who she was dating and before you could recall the beau's name, word of their breakup due to 'drama' spread like wildfire.
Now there's the latest events with Lindsay. Going to AA meetings. Lindsay, who is not even 21 yet has an obvious drinking problem. What does this tell young girls? That it's okay to party hard, be a drunk before you're even legal age to be drinking. This is not a positive example a young girl needs to see.
Finding a Role Model is horribly difficult, especially when nowadays it's all about sales and who is popular. But these two examples of Role Models aren't the only ones guilty, there are others out there who have done equally bad things and have a young girl following. These people need to open their eyes and realize that every action they take is influencing hundreds of young girls who in turn may unintentionally cause harm to themselves.
