Jellyfish Holds Secret to Fountain of Youth, Immortality
Scientists have discovered a species of jellyfish that is capable of reversing the aging process, thereby cheating death and achieving immortality.

The Turritopsis Nutricula is a hydrozoan, a taxonomic class of small, predatory, mostly saltwater animals that can include jellyfish. (The Turritopsis shares the same classification as another well-known jellyfish: the Portuguese Man O War.) In its mature phase, the Turritopsis is between 4-5mm in diameter and consists of a red, thin-walled bell surrounded by 80-90 tentacles.
Like other jellyfish, the Turritopsis has two distinct life stages: the polyp and the medusa. In the polyp phase, the animal is sexually immature and takes the form of a small stalk with feeding tentacles. The polyps then asexually produce medusa, mature jellyfish with an umbrella-shaped shaped body and tentacles. Most jellyfish die after reaching sexual maturity.
Unlike most jellyfish, however, the Turritopsis can revert back to a sexually immature phase after propagating through a process called transdifferentiation.
Transdifferentiation is the process by which a cell transforms into a different kind of cell that performs a different function. Transdifferentiation is usually seen when parts of an organ are regenerated. For example, some amphibians can regenerate damaged or missing parts of the eye. If the lens of an eye is damaged or removed, the animal's iris will regenerate lens cells.
Similarly, the Turritopsis medusa's cells transform to polyp cells, and it is able to repeat its life cycle again, indefinitely. In laboratory studies, 100 per cent of the Turritopsis medusa were able to revert to the polyp stage after reaching sexual maturity, leading scientists to theorize that the creatures are immortal.
Turritopsis nutricula originated in the Caribbean, but can now be found in temperate and tropical seas all over the world.
