Where Has the Music Gone?
The course of popular music has taken a turn which seems to lack creativity or passion. When will the next great musical revolution take place and how will the youth of society find their cultural identity?
As a college student I often wonder, what music will one day define my generation? I envy my grandmother's nostalgia when she hears the seductive sound of Frank Sinatra and smile when I watch my parents embarrassingly dance to Loverboy's "Working for the Weekend," but what about us? What music will define our youth? Because honestly, if it's any of the songs I hear on the radio today, (you know, the ones we grind to at school dances) I'm ashamed. How will I explain to my future children that the great "poets" of our generation wrote about bitches, hoes, and lots of champagne? Record companies are constantly glamorizing egotistic punks, and let's be real, what's left of MTV and VH1 are laughable at best.
One song that comes to mind is LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" which happens to be on the Top 10 Itunes chart. It has an incredibly catch melody and I'll admit, it makes me want to dance… in a club…all night…in Vegas. But if you stop for just a moment and look at the lyrics they're absurd, and in my opinion quite lame, "In the club party rock, lookin' for your girl? She on my jock. Nonstop when we in the spot, booty movin' weight like she on the block." Really LMFAO? Is that the best you got?
Where has the artistic drive to create passionate, subliminal music gone? When I plug in my headphones and walk around my school's campus, I want the music to release immense emotion and forgotten memories; I want my immediate perception of the world to change. I want to be ravished. Music has the incredibly unreal ability to transport a person's thoughts to any place or time imaginable, and I hope that those in the music industry understand the creative power they hold.
But, I haven't given up hope. I believe in the youth of our society and know that the desire to alter popular culture is ever present in the music scenes around the nation. Hopefully, my generation will find its voice in someone that truly personifies the message of our era, whatever that may be. We are living in an incredible time, and somewhere out there is a musician who is passionate enough to change our comprehension of mainstream culture and represent a generation who is yet to establish an identity.
Music has the uniquely rare power to change and influence the world, and I hope I never cease to believe that.
