Golf Club Review: The Cleveland HiBore XL
Great update on an already solid driver!
The Cleveland HiBore XL is a better version of their already popular HiBore driver. Yes, the XL means that it is bigger, up to the 460cc maximum that the USGA allows, but it also features a few new technologies as well. While the dished out shape (similar to Top Flite's old Magnum) lowers the center of gravity, the new XL's dimensions make the Moment Of Inertia much higher making for a very forgiving club head!
The deeper club head also moves weight around the perimeter and away from the club face maximizing the clubs distance. While it is an odd looking club, you cant argue with the results.
When I gave one a try over the Summer, I used a 9.5* version with the stock stiff shaft. The club is a little longer than I like at just over 45", but the closed club face helps to square the driver up during the swing. I decided not to get into the design features because I may miss the ball if I paid attention to the head for too long! When I hit a few balls, right off the bat I know that this was a good club.
Like most new drivers the ball took off on a high ball flight as soon as the club hit it. I was hitting a little draw with this club due to its closed face angle, but I didn't mind, they were high, long draws! I didn't think I would be able to to fade this club, and I was right, the best I could do was hit it straight, but again, a high draw is a great ball flight for distance if you can control it!
Overall, this is a good, solid club from Cleveland, they have a new model on the way for 2020 that I cant wait to get my hands on. If I can demo one with a little shorter shaft, I may fall in love with the thing! I'd give it a try, if not the XL, the original models from a couple years ago has been on sale at many online shops. The Internet is the best place for deals these days and golf clubs are no different!
