John Boehner Challenges Barack Obama to a Golf Game -- and Offers to Give Him Strokes
Will Speaker of the House John Boehner play golf with President Barack Obama? It seems inevitable.
On Fox News yesterday, John Boehner said he is up for a game of golf with Barack Obama. "I'm sure I'll have to give him strokes," the Congressman quipped. A month ago, Robert Gibbs spoke on behalf of the President, acknowledging that John Boehner's golf game is better than Barack Obamas, but noting that a showdown between the two is likely. [Jackson, David. "Obama, Boehner: A round of golf?" USAToday.com, 1/5/11. Downloaded from: ]
John Boehner and Barack Obama will probably play a private round of golf some time, announcing the results only after the fun is over. But wouldn't it be nice if they would play a televised game against each other? Even people who don't watch golf would probably tune in for that one. They could donate the proceeds from television coverage to a charity or to paying down the national debt.
And it would be easy for John Boehner and Barack Obama to make the game interesting - just let a legislative result ride on it. For example, if Boehner wins then Obama has to rubberstamp an appropriations bill; if Obama wins, Boehner has to support Obamacare (or some similar legislation proposed by the President). It would be horribly irresponsible to let our government's legislation ride on a golf game, but it would definitely make things interesting.
I jest, of course. I would settle for a simple, off-the-record game between Barack Obama and John Boehner. It would show good will and be entertaining on a slow news day.
