Top 10 Golfers of All Time

My rankings of the top 10 golfers of all time based on their accomplishments and contributions to the game of golf.

This is my list of the top ten golfers of all time. It is very difficult to measure players from different time periods against each other. I took major championships into heavy account when making this ranking, but also tried to account for golfers' contributions to the game and the way it is played. Since Bobby Jones was an amateur, and almost never played in the PGA Championship or the Masters, U.S. and British Amateurs are almost unanimously counted in his major total. For More Articles: The 27th Hole

1. Jack Nicklaus- he needs no argument other than his 18 majors (6 Masters, 4 U.S. Opens, 3 British Opens, and 5 PGA Championships), 2 U.S. Amateur wins, and 73 PGA Tour wins (2nd all time). 1963-1986 (First major win-last major win)

2. Bobby Jones- regarded as the most successful amateur golfer ever to compete on an international stage. He also was essential in starting the fourth major championship, the Masters. In 1930 he won the grand slam which for an amateur was the U.S. and British Opens and Amateurs. He won 13 majors overall in just 20 tries over his span of dominance (4 U.S. Opens, 3 British Opens, 5 U.S. Amateurs, and 1 British Amateur). 1923-1930

3. Tiger Woods- one of the most controversial figures in golf, Tiger still has plenty of time to add to his legacy. Right now he is third on the list, with 71 PGA Tour wins and 38 European Tour wins, both 3rd all time. He has dominated some majors (1996 Masters by 12 shots, 2000 U.S. Open by 15, 2000 British Open by 8), while being pushed to his limits by lesser-known players in others (2000 PGA Championship, 2005 Masters, 2020 U.S. Open). He won four majors in a row from 2000 to 2001. Overall, Tiger has won 14 majors (4 Masters, 3 U.S. Opens, 3 British Opens, and 4 PGA Championships) and 1 U.S. Amateur. 1997-2020

4. Walter Hagen- was known for his style and wealth. He helped raise the status and purses of professional golfers. He helped to win professionals some of the advantages that amateurs had enjoyed exclusively for a long time, like use of the clubhouses. He has 45 PGA Tour wins (8th all time) and 11 majors (2 U.S. Opens, 4 British Opens, 5 PGA Championships). Some would credit Hagen with 16 majors because he won 5 Western Opens, which were considered majors at the time. 1914-1929

5. Harry Vardon- grew up poor in Jersey and was forced to turn professional very early in an era where touring golf professionals were frowned upon and amateurs given every advantage. Vardon was the first international superstar golfer. He lost to Francis Ouimet in the famous 1913 U.S. Open. He invented the Vardon, or Overlapping, Grip, which is still widely used today. He won 7 majors (1 U.S. Open and 6 British Opens). 1896-1914

6. Ben Hogan- grew up near Byron Nelson and struggled with himself mentally and physically more than any other top golfer. Hogan was legendary for his dedication to the game and the amount of practice time he put in. He also made many contributions to the modern golf swing. He had 64 PGA Tour wins (4th all time) and 9 majors (2 Masters, 4 U.S. Opens, 1 British Open, 2 PGA Championships). 1946-1953

7. Young Tom Morris- the youngest major champion ever, winning the British Open at 17. He won his four straight British Opens from 1868 to 1872 (there was no British Open in 1871). He could have accomplished much more but died at the age of 24. He and his father, Old Tom Morris, are considered to be the founders of modern golf. He won 4 majors (4 British Opens). 1868-1872

8. Tom Watson- made the list due in large part to his ability to compete in major championships even today. He almost won the 2020 British Open at age 59. He was at the top of his game in the 1970s and 1980s when he led the PGA Tour money list five times. He won 8 majors (2 Masters, 1 U.S. Open, and 5 British Opens). 1977-1983

9. Gary Player- is said to be, along with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, the most important golfer to the worldwide popularity of golf. He is from the Republic of South Africa and played golf all over the world, with at least 165 professional wins. He has led a long line of successful golfers from South Africa to golf fame (Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, and Charl Schwartzel). He has 9 majors (3 Masters, 1 U.S. Open, 3 British Opens, and 2 PGA Championships). 1959-1978

10. Sam Snead- all time PGA Tour leader in wins with 82. He was known for his smooth golf swing and tremendous power. He had a country boy sort of image and was nicknamed Slammin' Sammy. In 1950 he won 11 PGA Tour Events, an accomplishment that has never been matched. He never won a U.S. Open but had four runner-up finishes. He has 7 majors (3 Masters, 1 British Open, and 3 PGA Championships. 1942-1954
