Advice for Women Golf Caddies
As a teen I spent three summer as a golf caddie at a private golf club. There are things I learned along the way that are sometimes limited to the experience of the female golf caddie. Here is some advice to be a successful golf caddie.
Note: I'm presenting these tips under the assumption that the majority of golfers you encounter will be men.
1. Learn the game. As a golf caddie your golfers will look to you for guidance throughout the game. They will turn to you moreso if they aren't familiar with the golf course. They may need assistance with the selection of their golf club for a particular shot. They also request assistance in reading the putting greens. Some golfers may assume as a woman that you don't know much about the game of golf. If you're confident with your knowledge of the game it can help a golfer improve his score tremendously. That will result in a larger tip for you. You may even be requested by a golfer for future rounds of golf.
2. Get fit. If you aren't fit before you start your job you will be soon after if you can stick it out. The more fit you are before you start the easier it will be for you to adapt to the job. Walking an average of four miles per round of golf with a heavy bag of clubs on your shoulder can be a shock to your system at first. You'll get used to it though. Overtime you'll build your endurance and stamina.
3. Be prepared for male behavior. Some male golfers may be surprised to have a woman caddie accompanying them on a round of golf. They often use their time on the course to relax and hang out with the guys. They may curse, drink beer, smoke cigars, pee behind a tree and talk about women. Some may even flirt with you. Be prepared for it all. Some will feel uncomfortable doing these around you and may apologize for losing their manners. Some things they do will be offensive while other things are not.
4. It takes time to learn the ropes. Don't worry if it takes you awhile to master your job. You may feel the pressure moreso as a female, but don't let mistakes rattle your nerves. You're human. For example, if you don't catch a golf ball a golfer tosses to you to put away in his bag, just brush it off and pick the ball up. Then practice catching golf balls at home.
