Man Attacked by Alligator on Florida Golf Course
In spite of a sign reading: "Beware Of Alligators" in front of a pond by the 6th hole at Lake Venice Golf Club in Venice, FL, a 50 year old Tennessee man still tried to retrieve his ball. With his hand.
I have been known to reach into the water in my home state of Arkansas and other states I have played the game in, but I know enough about the state of Florida not to do it there. I would be nervous about doing that anywhere in the Sunshine State, but especially in the southern part of the state where Venice is located. It's right on the Gulf of Mexico. Reaching into the water down there, even with one of those 8 or 12 foot ball retrievers, is not recommended. Not even if the ball in question is a Titleist Pro-V1. Not even a new Pro-V1.
It has been said that beginners at the game of golf should use cheap balls anyway, as none of them float. Even many seasoned players can't block water or a bunker out of their mind and it seems to attract the dimpled objects like a magnet.
Berger was very fortunate to escape serious injury, so we can joke about it without feeling guilty. Alabama natives might say something like "didn't he see the sign in front of the pond reading "beware of alligators"? "Oh yeah, he's from Tennessee, never mind".

It's not known if the club employee was Sherrie Daly, but she is reportedly pretty handy with a knife. Of course if her hubby John Daly was on hand, he could probably fend off the alligator with a lit cigarette and a bottle of Jack Daniels, provided "Long John" had emptied it first.

Seriously, I'm glad Mr. Berger is okay, and I would make book on him "taking a drop" the next time he hits the ball into water.
